Tantura was a Palestinian village located south of Haifa. Its lands covered approximately 14,520 dunams. Its population was estimated at around 750 inhabitants in 1929 and approximately 1,490 in 1945, before armed Zionist forces destroyed the village and displaced its inhabitants, whose population had reached approximately 1,728 by 1948.
The village’s economy depended primarily on the cultivation of grains, field crops, and fruit trees, as well as fishing.
The occupying forces carried out a massacre in Tantura on the night of May 22 and during the day of May 23, 1948. According to the source, Zionist Haganah forces occupied Tantura and forced dozens of its inhabitants to dig trenches before opening fire on them and burying them in those trenches and in mass graves. The source states that approximately 200 people were killed in the massacre.
